Logging in to get information is, in fact, a big part of the problem. If I hadn't had such a hard time logging in to post this answer, I might have been able to point you to a McAfee support sheet that discusses this issue directly on point. If McAfee 2009 is running, it will not permit Windows Defender to run at the same time. Not a big issue, but a McAfee issue none the less.
